Child Tax Credit - Are You Eligible and How Much Can You Claim

By: Evan Felt

Do You Qualify For The Child Tax Credit?

In today's world, raising a child can sometimes be stressful, particularly when funds are limited. Children are constantly needing something, whether it be new clothes or the newest video game. Figuring out how to find the money can be almost impossible at times. However, there are government benefits available to struggling and low income households that may help to alleviate the burden in circumstances like these.

One such government benefit is the Child Tax Credit, which was created and intended to lend a helping hand to caregivers and families of school age kids and university students to make certain that children can have everything they need. This is very beneficial to low income families that have kids younger than sixteen or a young person that is still in full-time education.

This particular Tax Credit is based upon the amount of children in your family and also considers your total household income. Additionally with getting an overall tax credit, you can claim a specified amount ofchild benefit for every child living in your home. You don't have to be related to the child or children, although you do have to be the primary carer and the children must live in your home.

Claiming the Child Tax Credit is extremely simple. When you first apply, you're going to have to order a claim pack. You will also need to provide proof of who you are, which can be as simple as providing your national insurance number. Once you're approved, you can renew your Child Tax Credit by by mail or phone. This is done annually and you'll be notified when it is time for you to renew. It's critical to report any modifications to your situation such as changes in household size and earnings. If for any reason you fail to report a change, you could end up having to pay back the tax credits you've received.

You can receive Child Tax Credits in a number of different ways. You can receive the child allowance monthly or weekly, and it can be transferred into any account that you indicate. The Child Tax Credit must be transferred to the main caretaker's account and can come in the form of a cheque, which will be mailed to the address on your application. This child benefit may be claimed additionally with the Working Tax Credit, which is a government benefit if you or your partner are employed.

If you don't get approved these benefit entitlements, or do not agree with the calculation of your tax credit, you have to right to appeal a tax credit decision. Keep in mind, however, that this needs to be done within thirty days of the notification of denial.
